Voters hand Democrats control of the House and Senate, with Trump linking the result partly to the Iran war and Vance calling the conflict the main reason for the losses.

Democrats secured majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the 3 November 2026 midterm elections, ending unified Republican control of Washington for the final two years of President Donald Trump's term.
Projections showed Democrats with at least 54 Senate seats and more than 230 House seats, with some races still outstanding. The results included upsets in Texas, where Democrats won a Senate seat for the first time in decades and defeated Governor Greg Abbott, and in other traditionally Republican states such as Kansas and South Carolina.
Trump told reporters that the Iran war, which began with joint US-Israeli strikes on 28 February, contributed to the losses by raising fuel prices. "The Iran thing we had to do, and we continue to do it," he said. Vice President JD Vance was more direct in a post on X: "The reason we lost is the war."
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the results showed voters had "had enough of the extremism" and wanted Congress to focus on delivery. Incoming Democratic majorities are expected to use oversight powers and control of appropriations to scrutinize war spending and related policies.
Markets reacted immediately. Oil prices fell sharply on expectations that Democratic control could pressure the administration toward de-escalation, while equity indices rose. Brent crude dropped more than 8 percent in one session, trading near $94 a barrel.
The new Congress takes office in January. Democrats lack the two-thirds majorities needed to override a veto, so any legislation to constrain the war or reverse tariffs will require negotiation or Republican support.
Trump said he was willing to work with Democrats and accepted the results. The immediate consequence is a shift from unified Republican government to divided control, with foreign policy and cost-of-living pressures as the central points of contention.
