Democrats won multiple governorships on November 3, including the first Black woman governor in U.S. history in Georgia and the first Democratic governor of Texas in more than three decades. Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated Rick Jackson in Georgia. Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Greg Abbott in Texas.
Additional Democratic wins occurred in Iowa, Ohio, and Nevada. Deb Haaland won in New Mexico, becoming the first Native American woman elected governor. The results give Democrats a net gain in state executive offices. Republicans retained the Florida governorship with Byron Donalds, who becomes the state's first Black governor.
These state-level outcomes accompanied the federal gains that delivered Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress. In Texas, the dual victories for Senate and governor represent a significant shift from the pattern of recent decades. Hinojosa's win ends Abbott's tenure after three terms. In Georgia, Bottoms' election breaks a 24-year Republican hold on the office.
Many of the Democratic candidates emphasized costs of living, health care access, and local issues. The contests drew heavy spending, particularly in Georgia where the Republican candidate self-funded much of his campaign. Turnout patterns mirrored national trends, with elevated early voting in several states.
The new governors will take office in January 2027. Their ability to advance priorities will depend on the composition of state legislatures, which also saw shifts in several places. The results expand Democratic control of executive branches at a time when federal power is also moving toward the party.
