Delhi Police detained the parents of Ankita Bhandari in the early hours of 15 October after they continued a sit-in at India Gate demanding justice in the 2022 murder case.
The protest began on the evening of 14 October. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi joined the parents near India Gate and sat with them for part of the night. Police moved in around 4 a.m. and took the parents into custody. Ankita’s mother said she would begin a hunger strike if the demands were not addressed. The case has remained a public focus in Uttarakhand and nationally because of questions about the investigation and the subsequent handling of evidence.
The detention occurred on the same day that security preparations were under way for a separate call by Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke to hoist the national flag at Central Park in Connaught Place on 16 October. Dipke and two co-conveners, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were earlier remanded to judicial custody for allegedly trespassing to reach the denotified protest site at Jantar Mantar and for violating bonds that required them to keep the peace. Opposition leaders, including Gandhi, condemned those arrests and said the party and the CJP were “fighting for the same cause.”
The Ankita Bhandari protest sits inside a wider pattern of street actions in the capital this week. Farmers, women’s groups and youth organisations have also mobilised around the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, with some describing the process as “Har galli Jantar Mantar.” The Supreme Court is expected to hear petitions filed by Gandhi and other INDIA-bloc leaders challenging aspects of the revision, including demands for booth-level data on deletions and a temporary halt until the court rules.
Police have sealed the Jantar Mantar area and are managing multiple protest sites. The immediate effect of the India Gate detention is that the parents are no longer on the pavement; the longer effect is that the case remains visible in national political conversation at a moment when several other opposition-led protests are also under way. No formal statement from the Uttarakhand government on the latest demand was reported on the morning of 15 October.
The sequence illustrates how a single unresolved criminal case continues to draw national political figures into street action more than three years after the crime, while parallel disputes over electoral rolls and protest rights occupy the same public space in central Delhi.
