Delhi-NCR faces fresh waterlogging as schools and shops shut

Heavy rain overnight and into Tuesday morning caused severe waterlogging across Delhi and the National Capital Region, forcing schools and many shops to close.
In Gurugram, at least 12 school buses were submerged, leaving children stranded for hours. Traffic on NH-48 and several arterial roads came to a standstill. All 11 districts of Delhi were under a red alert for heavy rain.
The India Meteorological Department had forecast continued wet weather with thunderstorms. Parts of Delhi recorded significant rainfall, turning underpasses and low-lying stretches into flooded zones. Areas including Mathura Road, Connaught Place, Bhairon Marg, ITO and Zakhira underpass were among those affected.
Gurugram authorities issued a work-from-home advisory for corporate offices and educational institutions. Flight operations at the airports also faced delays the previous day, with nearly 400 flights affected.
The repeated flooding this monsoon season has again highlighted long-standing problems with drainage capacity and urban planning in the region. Residents and local officials have pointed to clogged drains, encroachment on natural water channels and inadequate storm-water infrastructure as recurring causes.
Further showers were expected through the day.
