SpaceX Crew Dragon Freedom splashed down in the Pacific off Los Angeles on Thursday with the four members of NASA's Crew-12, ending a stay of 237 days on the International Space Station. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the crew had travelled more than 100 million miles. Recovery ship Shannon took the capsule aboard. The four will brief reporters at Johnson Space Center in Houston at 3:30 p.m. EDT on 15 October.
On board were NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. NASA's release put the landing at 8:34 a.m. local time on 8 October. The photograph released with it, credited to Keegan Barber, shows Freedom in the minutes before it hit the water. Isaacman's line on the return was operational rather than ceremonial: building the ability to do this repeatedly is what lets the agency go farther.
The mission launched on 13 February from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral, the pad SpaceX now uses for crew flights alongside the historic 39A. Freedom had been docked to the Harmony zenith port. The handover was set by the arrival of Crew-13, which lifted off on 1 October at 11:10 a.m. EDT, also from SLC-40, and docked to Harmony's forward port at 23:05 UTC the same day. That rendezvous, about eight hours after launch, is the fastest a Crew Dragon has made to the station. Crew-12's departure was cleared only after that docking. Two crews overlapped, which is how the station keeps a full complement.
Undocking was on 7 October. NASASpaceflight's timeline put the departure from Harmony at 12:05 UTC, with about 27.5 hours of free flight before the deorbit burn, trunk separation and splashdown. The Pacific recovery off California, rather than the Atlantic off Florida, is the profile SpaceX has used when weather and ship positions favour the west coast. Shannon is the recovery vessel assigned to this landing.
The work log is the part of a crew mission that the splashdown photograph does not show. Meir and Adenot made four spacewalks together during the increment. The crew ran station maintenance and the usual stack of experiments that fly on a six-month manifest. NASA has not, in the splashdown release, itemised which experiments closed out. The Houston briefing on 15 October is where those numbers usually appear: samples returned, hardware installed, hours outside.
Meir is on her second long flight. She flew on the station in 2019-20 and made the first all-woman spacewalk with Christina Koch in October 2019. Adenot is the first French woman to fly a long-duration station mission under the ESA corps. Fedyaev has flown before, on Crew-6. Hathaway is the NASA pilot on this crew. The mix, two Americans, one European, one Russian, is the standard seat swap that has survived the break in almost every other US-Russian channel.
The next public date is the 15 October briefing, not another launch. Crew-13 is now the station crew. Freedom is the capsule that has to be turned around, inspected and assigned, or retired from this role. Isaacman's point about repetition is a comment on that pipeline. A splashdown at 8:34 a.m. after 237 days is one data point in it. The figure he attached, more than 100 million miles, is the distance the station covered under them, not a deep-space transit. The station moves at about 17,500 miles an hour. Over 237 days that arithmetic clears 100 million miles without leaving low Earth orbit.
