Congress puts Sachin Pilot in charge of Punjab as Channi and Warring both say yes

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge assigned Punjab to Sachin Pilot on Saturday, 5 September, and moved Bhupesh Baghel to Assam. By Monday every public faction in the state unit had released a welcome. That chorus is the news. The fight underneath it has not been withdrawn.

The quarrel is simple to name and hard to close. On 1 July the high command kept Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Congress president and made former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi chairman of the campaign committee. Channi's camp wanted Warring out. Baghel, the then in-charge and a former Chhattisgarh chief minister, tried to mediate and was accused by the dissidents of taking Warring's side. Punjab votes in early 2027. While AAP and the rest of the field have been picking candidates, Congress has been arguing about its own office-bearers.

Pilot until this weekend handled Chhattisgarh, Baghel's home ground. Baghel now takes Assam from Jitendra Singh. The swap looks like a cooling move: take the man the Punjab rebels blamed and send in a Rajasthan leader who does not own a local faction. A party MP from Punjab called Pilot "a neutral person" who could start from scratch. Channi posted thanks to the high command. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, a Lok Sabha MP in the same rebel cluster, wished Pilot well and said his "connect with the people" would add momentum. Warring welcomed the change and thanked Baghel as a "guide and mentor."

A source close to Pilot told The Federal that within hours of the appointment he had already spoken to Channi, Randhawa and other anti-Warring leaders, asked them to keep the argument off television, and promised to hear them. That is the method Pilot used in other state assignments: call everyone on day one, then see who still wants a public fight.

One internal reading of the choice is personal chemistry. Randhawa is the AICC in-charge for Rajasthan, Pilot's state. The two men are said to deal easily with each other. If that channel works, the high command can talk to the rebels without going through Warring or through Baghel. If it fails, Punjab Congress will arrive at the 2027 election with the same split ticket it has now, only with a new visitor from Delhi holding the file.

Warring's job looks safer today than it did last week. Several Congress sources told national papers that a change of state president is now unlikely. Channi's camp has not publicly dropped the demand. It has only greeted the new in-charge. Those two facts can live together for a few weeks. They cannot live together through candidate selection.

Pilot's record is a sequence of recoveries after public breaks with the party leadership in Rajasthan. Kharge's use of him as a state firefighter is now a pattern. Punjab is a harder room than the last ones. The state's Congress vote is squeezed by AAP in the cities and by a crowded field in the countryside. An in-charge cannot manufacture that vote. He can only stop the party's own faces from spending the campaign on each other.

Monday's relief inside the party is real and thin. All factions accepted the messenger. None of them accepted the other faction's claim on the state presidency. That is the file Pilot opened this weekend.
