The Democratic Republic of the Congo recorded its highest weekly Ebola death toll of the current outbreak, according to figures released on August 24.
Health officials said the spike reflects both the spread of the virus into new areas and the challenges of delivering treatment and isolation in remote communities. Exact numbers were not immediately broken down by province in the public summary.
The World Health Organization and Congolese health ministry continue to operate vaccination campaigns and contact tracing. Previous outbreaks in the country have shown that rapid case detection and ring vaccination can limit larger epidemics.
