Coast Guard ties a debris field off Nantucket to a missing medevac jet
A Canadian-registered Latitude Air Ambulance Gulfstream left Bermuda at 12:41 a.m. Saturday for Boston and dropped about 13,000 feet in two minutes before contact was lost. Four Canadians and two Bermudians were aboard. The cutter William Sparling stayed out overnight.

The US Coast Guard said late on Saturday that a debris field off Nantucket is wreckage from a medical jet that vanished on the way from Bermuda to Boston with six people aboard. Searchers kept working through the night. No survivors had been reported by Sunday morning.
The Federal Aviation Administration told the Coast Guard early on Saturday that it had lost contact with the aircraft. The jet, a Gulfstream operated by Latitude Air Ambulance and registered in Canada, left L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda at 12:41 a.m. Atlantic time on Saturday, 03:01 GMT, according to FlightAware data cited by Reuters. Skyport, the Bermuda airport operator, said the aircraft carried four crew and two passengers. The Coast Guard said four of the six were Canadian and two were Bermudian, and that next of kin had been notified. Canada's transport minister, Steven MacKinnon, wrote on X that four Canadians were on the plane and that Ottawa was working with the search authorities.
The descent the trackers recorded
FlightAware data show the jet held about 24,000 feet, 7,300 metres, for much of the crossing, then descended about 13,000 feet in roughly two minutes shortly before controllers lost contact. A separate account, given to ABC by a person familiar with the inquiry, put the drop before impact at about 7,500 feet. The two figures are not the same measurement. One is a tracker reading of a descent. The other is an investigator's early estimate of the fall into the water. Both describe a loss of height too fast for a normal approach to Boston, and both end in the same place: a debris field the Coast Guard has tied to this aircraft, south of the Massachusetts mainland.
The FAA alerted the Coast Guard around 2 a.m. Eastern. Assets on the search on Saturday included aircraft, a helicopter and a motor lifeboat. The cutter William Sparling was assigned to stay on scene through the night. A debris confirmation this early narrows the box. It does not end the search for the six. Medical flights of this type usually carry a patient and a small clinical crew on top of the pilots. Skyport's split, four crew and two passengers, is the public headcount. It does not say which of the two passengers was the patient.
What a debris field does and does not prove
The Coast Guard's phrase was careful. It had "located a debris field that has been confirmed to be associated with the missing aircraft." Association is not a cause. A Gulfstream breaking up at the end of a 13,000-foot drop can leave a field without telling a reader whether the start of the drop was mechanical, medical, or a loss of control in weather. Nantucket sits on the route from Bermuda to Boston. The water there in early October is still warm enough for a survival window measured in hours, not days, which is why the cutter stayed out after the debris call.
Latitude Air Ambulance is an Ontario operator. A Canadian-registered medical jet, a Bermudian departure, a US search, and a Canadian minister on the wire is the jurisdictional picture. The investigation, once bodies or the recorder are recovered, will sit across those three authorities. Until then the public record is a departure time, a height, a two-minute descent, six names still held by next of kin, and a field of debris off an island that was not the destination.
The open item is the recorder and the patient. If the flight data recorder is in the field the Coast Guard has marked, the 13,000-foot reading can be checked against the aircraft's own instruments. If it is not, the next useful fact is whether any of the six is found alive in a window that was already closing when the debris was confirmed on Saturday night.
