Ukrainian civilians evacuated from the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky crossed into Ukrainian-controlled territory on Saturday. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the residents had crossed the border in the Chernihiv region. US First Lady Melania Trump, who announced the localized ceasefire, described the operation as proof that humanity can rise above war. Zelensky publicly thanked her for mediation that facilitated the truce, humanitarian deliveries and the movement of people.
The ceasefire covered an 87-hour period that began at 03:00 Kyiv time on 27 October and was scheduled to end at 22:59 on 1 November. It applied to the Oleshky sector. De-mining teams cleared primary access roads around the municipal hospital. A convoy of 25 buses and specialized ambulances then carried elderly residents, people with limited mobility and families, including those with pets. Some evacuees traveled by bus and plane through Russia and Belarus before reaching Ukraine. David Arakhamia, head of the Servant of the People faction, reported that the fourth and final aircraft had landed in Gomel.
Zelensky said all evacuated citizens would receive the assistance they need. He also thanked Ukrainian defense forces for securing the conditions of the operation. Melania Trump stated that residents could choose their destination and that some might prefer Russia while others chose Ukraine. The agreement included preparations for demining, which was required before aid and people could move along contaminated roads.
Oleshky, on the banks of the Dnipro, has been under Russian occupation since the early months of the full-scale invasion. Civilians there faced shortages of food, medicine and clean water. Ukraine's Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets led Kyiv's negotiating team. The Kremlin confirmed the ceasefire, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov saying Russian military officials were coordinating implementation. The truce is the most significant localized silence in the southern sector since the invasion began more than four and a half years ago.
The operation followed Melania Trump's announcement on 23 October of a temporary ceasefire to allow aid and evacuations through a designated corridor. Implementation began later in the month after demining and logistical arrangements. Evacuees who reached the Ukrainian side on Saturday included people who had spent years under occupation. Some were draped in Ukrainian flags upon arrival and embraced relatives.
No public total of the number of people moved has been released by either side. Zelensky's statement confirmed that those who left Oleshky under the arrangement had crossed into Ukraine. The route through Belarus and Russia added distance but avoided active front lines. The 87-hour window provided the time needed for road clearance and the movement of the convoy and aircraft.
The ceasefire was limited to the Oleshky sector and did not extend to other parts of the front. Fighting continued elsewhere. The humanitarian corridor operated only for the duration of the agreed silence. Once the window closed, the prior military situation in the area was expected to resume. The successful extraction of civilians who chose to leave demonstrates that limited, time-bound arrangements can move people when both sides implement the terms.
Zelensky's thanks to Melania Trump and the American side placed the mediation on the public record. The First Lady's statement framed the outcome as evidence that coordinated action can produce concrete results for trapped civilians. Further such arrangements would require new agreements on timing, demining and routes. For the residents who crossed on Saturday, the immediate result is arrival on Ukrainian-controlled territory after years in occupation.
