China strips Zhao Zongqi, the Western Theatre chief at Galwan, from the CPPCC
The advisory body voted on 26 August to drop the general who commanded the PLA opposite India in 2017 and 2020. Beijing gave no reason. Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli had already been removed from the state military commission.

China's top political advisory body voted on 26 August to remove General Zhao Zongqi from the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. It also dismissed him as deputy director of the CPPCC's ethnic and religious affairs committee and revoked his membership. Xinhua carried the decision. Beijing offered no explanation and announced no investigation.
Zhao commanded the People's Liberation Army Western Theatre from 2016 until December 2020. That command covers the frontier with India. He was in the post through the 2017 Doklam standoff on the Sikkim-Bhutan-China junction and through the 2020 crisis in eastern Ladakh, including the 15 June fight in the Galwan Valley.
Twenty Indian soldiers died at Galwan. Beijing acknowledged four PLA dead. Independent assessments put Chinese losses higher. ANI reported in 2020, citing a U.S. intelligence assessment, that Zhao authorised the Galwan operation to "teach India a lesson." He handed the theatre to General Zhang Xudong later that year after reaching standard retirement age.
Where this sits in the purge
The Zhao vote came two days before the National People's Congress Standing Committee removed Zhang Youxia, vice-chairman of the state Central Military Commission, and Liu Zhenli, chief of the Joint Staff Department. Those two cuts left Xi Jinping and Zhang Shengmin as the only sitting members of the state CMC. Almanaque has already recorded that Friday decision.
Zhao's case is different in kind. He is a retired theatre commander, not a current CMC officer. The vehicle is the CPPCC, an advisory body, not the military commission. The effect is the same direction of travel. A general associated with the most violent India-China clash in 45 years has now lost his last formal political posts.
The Centre for Strategic and International Studies estimated in February 2026 that 101 senior PLA officers had been dismissed or had disappeared, covering 52 percent of leadership positions in its sample. Zhao's name now joins that ledger. The party has not said whether the charge is corruption, loyalty, operational failure or something else.
Why the India file still matters
Western Theatre Command is the formation that faces the Line of Actual Control. Doklam in 2017 and Galwan in 2020 were its wars of position. Zhao's six years in that chair make him the uniform most closely tied, in Indian public memory, to both crises. Stripping him from the CPPCC does not change the LAC. It does change who in Beijing still carries political cover for those years.
New Delhi will read the move against the other Friday cuts. Zhang Youxia was the highest-ranked uniformed officer in the PLA. Liu Zhenli ran joint staff. Zhao ran the India border. Three different layers of the same institution lost status in the same week. The common author is the party centre. The common method is a vote that cites no facts.
What is not known
No indictment has been published. No freeze of assets has been announced in open sources. No PLA Daily commentary has named Zhao's offence. Readers who want a charge sheet will not find one. Readers who want a pattern will find it in the sequence: theatre commander, joint staff chief, CMC vice-chair, all moved off their remaining posts inside a few days.
Zhao is not young. He left operational command in 2020. The CPPCC seat was residual status. Taking it away is a political act, not a change of war plans. The Western Theatre still exists. The LAC still exists. The files from June 2020 still exist. The men who signed those files are now fewer in number on the official lists.
Friday's CMC vote and Wednesday's CPPCC vote should be read together. One emptied the state military commission down to two names. The other retired the public face of the Galwan command from the last body that still carried his title. That is the week's military news from Beijing, stated without a motive Beijing will not supply.
