The central government has given in-principle approval to lease out 11 airports operated by the Airports Authority of India.
The airports will be offered in five bundled concessions following extensive inter-ministerial consultations. Official documents reviewed by business media confirmed the decision.
Bundling is intended to make the packages more attractive to private operators by combining higher-traffic and lower-traffic airports. The move continues the earlier privatisation and public-private partnership approach already applied to major airports such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
Specific airport names and the exact structure of the five bundles have not been released in the initial confirmation. The process will now move to detailed bid design and market testing.
The decision reflects the government's effort to attract private capital into regional aviation infrastructure while retaining regulatory oversight through AAI and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
