Cambodia and the United States set Angkor Sentinel for February 2027
Phnom Penh and Washington will resume joint drills after a pause that began in 2017. The exercise name is Angkor Sentinel. The announcement on 4 September lands while Cambodia still hosts Chinese-built facilities on the coast.

Cambodia and the United States plan to restart joint military exercises in February 2027 under the name Angkor Sentinel, according to an Associated Press report on 4 September. The previous US-Cambodia drill series stopped in 2017, when Phnom Penh swung toward Beijing and Washington cut the habit of landing troops for combined training.
A restart after nine years is a political signal before it is a tactical one. Cambodia's coast still carries Chinese-built infrastructure that US officials have treated as a dual-use problem, especially around Ream. Hun Manet's government has spent the last two years trying to reopen rooms in ASEAN and in Washington without dropping the China relationship that funds roads, ports and party machinery. Inviting US units back onto a Cambodian training calendar is one of those rooms.
What the name is doing
Angkor Sentinel is a Cambodian frame. It puts the temples, not a US command name, on the exercise. That matters in a country where sovereignty language is the price of any foreign uniform. The February 2027 date gives both sides 17 months to write the scope: how many troops, which weapons, whether naval drills are included, and whether Chinese observers will be in the stands. None of those details were in the Friday notice.
US defence officials have wanted a way back into mainland Southeast Asia that is not only the Philippines. Cambodia is not a treaty ally. It is a former exercise partner that left. Getting the name back on the schedule is cheaper than a new base and more visible than a staff talk.
The China fact that does not move
A joint exercise does not empty Ream or rewrite the commercial contracts that built it. Beijing will read the February date as a hedge, not a reversal. Washington will read it as proof that Manet will take US training hours when they are offered. Both readings can be true at once. The test is whether Angkor Sentinel happens on time and whether the second year follows. One drill is a photo. A series is a policy.
