Caitlin Clark played her first game at a senior FIBA Women's World Cup on 4 September in Berlin and did it from the bench. USA Basketball listed the starting five against China as Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. Coach Kara Lawson went with World Cup and Olympic seniority. Clark entered as the second unit's handler.
Through three quarters the United States led 70-42. Clark's line at that point, as compiled in live reports from Sporting News, was 16 minutes, 8 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 2-for-5 from the field, 1-for-3 from three, 3-for-4 from the line. The first World Cup three came early enough to be clipped and circulated before halftime. A later sequence had her pushing after a Chinese miss and finding Kiki Iriafen at the rim.
China cut the lead to single digits in the second quarter behind a 9-0 run. Luo had 11 points at that stage. The Americans rebuilt the margin by the end of the third. The opener was the first of three group games in Group D. Italy is due on 6 September and Czechia on 7 September, both in the mid-afternoon Eastern window, before the knockout bracket starts on 8 September.
The tournament runs 4 to 13 September. The United States has won four straight World Cup golds and has not lost a World Cup game since 2006. A'ja Wilson is out with injury. The twelve-player group still holds Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Paige Bueckers, Jackie Young, Aliyah Boston and Clark. Boston, Clark's Indiana Fever teammate, is the other Fever player on the roster.
Lawson's starting choice was the pregame story because Clark had been MVP of the World Cup qualifiers in Puerto Rico in March and is the most watched player in the women's game. Gray started at point instead. She has Olympic gold from 2021 and 2024 and World Cup gold from 2022. Lawson has said Clark's value is the ball in her hands. Sixteen minutes and eight assists in a blowout is the first data point on how that translates when the first five are already built.
Berlin is also a first for Clark in a major senior global event. She has carried the Fever and the college game. She has not, until Friday, worn the senior World Cup shirt in a group opener. The minutes will be the stat to track against Italy and Czechia. If they stay in the mid-teens, the bench role is the plan. If they climb, Lawson is opening the offense once the game is decided or once Gray sits.
Group D is China, Italy and Czechia. A clean group puts the United States on the side of the bracket it has occupied for two decades. Clark's debut does not change that path. It sets her rotation. Eight assists in sixteen minutes is a high-usage bench shift. Two made field goals is a quiet scoring night. Both can be true in a 28-point third-quarter lead.
The rest of the field opened the same morning. Japan played Mali. Australia played Puerto Rico. Spain, with former Iowa player Megan DiLeo, played Germany in the home arena. Those games do not bear on Clark's minutes. The Italy game on Sunday will.
