BJP plots a Vadnagar-to-Varanasi torch march for Modi's 25 years
Seva Jyoti Yatra will run from the prime minister's birthplace to his Varanasi seat. Seva Pakhwada from 17 September to 2 October is meant to cover sanitation, blood donation, planting and health camps. Vinod Tawde is the national convener. The clock ends on 7 October, the day Modi first swore in as Gujarat chief minister in 2001.

The Bharatiya Janata Party will send a Seva Jyoti Yatra from Vadnagar in Gujarat to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to mark Narendra Modi's birthday season and 25 years in public office, party sources said on 1 September. National general secretary Vinod Tawde is the convener. Around the march the party will run a 15-day Seva Pakhwada, also billed as Seva Sankalp Mahotsav, from 17 September to 2 October.
The fortnight is supposed to produce sanitation drives, blood donation camps, tree plantation and health camps. The political calendar underneath it is sharper. Modi took the oath as chief minister of Gujarat on 7 October 2001. That date is the 25-year mark the yatra is built to reach. Vadnagar is his birthplace. Varanasi is the seat he has held in the Lok Sabha since 2014.
A torch march between those two towns is a map of the career the party wants retold: small-town Gujarat to the Ganga seat, via two decades in office. It is also a way to put workers on the road in states that matter before the next round of assembly tests, under a banner that says service rather than campaign.
What a seva fortnight actually measures
Blood units collected, trees planted and lanes swept are countable. Whether those counts change voting intention is a different question. The BJP has used seva periods before, around Gandhi Jayanti and party anniversaries. The difference this time is the personal 25-year frame and the fixed geography from Vadnagar to Varanasi.
Tawde's job is logistics. A march that long has to be broken into stages, with local units taking the flame for a day and handing it on. If a stage fails in a state where the organisation is thin, the photograph of arrival in Varanasi still happens and the gap is visible only to the people who walked the empty stretch.
The opposition will call it a personality cult with brooms. The party will call it gratitude and service. Both descriptions can be true at once. The factual core is narrower: a route, a convener, a 15-day activity list, and a date in early October that only exists because of an oath taken in Gandhinagar in 2001.
Watch the turnout at the Vadnagar flag-off and the Varanasi close. Those two crowds, and the number of districts that actually file camp reports, will say more about the machine than the slogans printed on the torch.
