Bihar students clash with police in Patna over teachers’ recruitment exam format

Thousands of students preparing for the Bihar Public Service Commission teachers’ recruitment examinations clashed with police in Patna on 25 August 2026. Protesters broke through barricades and attempted a gherao of the Chief Minister’s residence after being prevented from marching there.

The demonstrators, mainly aspirants for posts to be filled next month, demanded that the written examination be conducted in a single stage rather than separate preliminary and main papers. They hurled stones; police responded with water cannons and lathi-charge.

The confrontation occurred near Gandhi Maidan and later at Dakbungalow Chauraha. Visuals showed large crowds pressing against police lines and officers directing water jets to disperse them. Several students sustained injuries; the precise number was not immediately confirmed by authorities.

BPSC has scheduled the teachers’ recruitment process for September. The two-stage format is standard for many state commission examinations and is intended to shortlist candidates before the more intensive mains. Aspirants argue that a single written paper would reduce preparation burden and cost.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s administration has faced repeated student protests over recruitment delays and examination procedures. Previous cycles of teacher appointments have been delayed by litigation and administrative revisions, leaving large numbers of trained graduates waiting for openings.

Police maintained that the march on the official residence had not been authorised and that public order required the use of force once barricades were breached. Student leaders insisted the demonstration remained peaceful until water cannons were deployed.

The incident adds to a pattern of youth unemployment protests in Bihar, where government jobs remain a primary route to stable employment. Teachers’ posts are particularly sought after because of the scale of vacancies in government schools and the relative security of the positions.

State education officials have not announced any change to the examination structure. BPSC is expected to issue the final schedule and syllabus in the coming days. Any alteration at this stage would require formal notification and could delay the entire process further.

Local hospitals treated injured students. Political parties across the spectrum issued statements criticising the police response or the government’s handling of recruitment. The immediate effect is heightened tension in Patna and continued uncertainty for the thousands of candidates already registered.

Whether the protest produces a policy shift will depend on the government’s willingness to reopen the format question before the September dates. Past experience suggests the administration prefers to proceed with the existing structure once logistics are fixed.
