Bihar students clash with police in Patna over BPSC teacher recruitment format

Thousands of students, most of them aspirants for the Bihar Public Service Commission teachers' recruitment examinations, clashed with police in Patna on 25 August 2026 while attempting to march to the Chief Minister's residence.

The protesters demanded a single-stage written examination instead of the current two-stage process of prelims and mains. They broke through police barricades, hurled stones and faced water cannons and lathi charge. Several were detained.

The demonstration formed part of a longer agitation by candidates who argue that the multi-stage format increases cost, delay and uncertainty. The Bihar government has so far maintained that the existing structure is required for screening large numbers of applicants.

Police prevented the march from reaching the Chief Minister's residence. Video footage showed students pushing against cordons and officers deploying water cannons. The intensity of the confrontation marked one of the sharper student-police clashes in the state capital this year.

No official casualty figures were released by late evening. The state administration said the protest remained confined to a limited area and that normal traffic resumed after the main group dispersed.

The BPSC teacher recruitment process has drawn repeated complaints about procedural complexity. Whether the government will review the examination format in response to the 25 August violence remains open. For the moment the demand for a single-stage test stands unmet and the street confrontation has added a new layer of pressure.
