Bezos, Musk, Pichai and Altman invited to Trump’s state dinner for Xi

Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Sundar Pichai, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Tim Cook, Michael Dell and Jane Fraser are on the guest list for the White House state dinner for Xi Jinping on Thursday, 24 September, senior US officials said on 18 September. The dinner in the East Room is the social centre of the first Chinese state visit to Washington in more than ten years, and it places the people who run America's largest AI and hardware firms in the same room as the two governments that are trying to police them.
Xi and Peng Liyuan land at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday. President Donald Trump will meet the aircraft, which officials described as an unusual courtesy. Thursday's programme includes an indoor arrival ceremony on the State Floor, a troop review in the Rose Garden, a closed bilateral meeting, a separate programme for Melania Trump and Peng, and then the dinner. Both presidents are due to speak before the meal. A private tea and a visit to the National Archives are also on the schedule before departure from Andrews.
What the two sides say is on the table
Officials listed trade, tariffs, artificial intelligence and rare earths. US officials have ruled out a straight swap of American export controls for Chinese mineral licences. Lawmakers have asked the presidents to discuss AI safety standards. People close to the companies say anything as ambitious as a joint slowdown in model training is unlikely. The more probable products are narrower: tariff relief on selected goods, language on semiconductor sales, and a political picture of two leaders who can still share a room.
Trump has told reporters he expects "a lot" of deals and that Washington is "doing very well" with China. Xi has not previewed concessions. The visit comes days after Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, which authorises tariffs of up to 100 percent on large buyers of Russian oil, a category that includes China and India. Those tariffs are a separate legal track. They will hang over the dinner even if no one reads them out with the toasts.
Why the names on the list matter
Huang's Nvidia sells the chips that both Washington and Beijing treat as strategic. Altman's OpenAI and Pichai's Google are the two most visible American model labs. Musk's Tesla still builds cars in Shanghai. Cook, now Apple's executive chairman after stepping down as chief executive, runs a company whose assembly line is still concentrated in China. Bezos no longer runs Amazon day to day but remains its largest shareholder. Fraser's Citigroup is there as a bank that still wants a China business. Dell makes the boxes that hold other people's silicon.
A senior official called the dinner the hottest ticket in town and said seats are scarce. That is public-relations talk. The substance is that the White House is treating AI firms as part of the diplomatic furniture, not as spectators. If the Thursday meeting produces even a thin statement on compute or minerals, those guests will be able to say they were in the building when it was written. If it produces nothing, they will still have been seen walking in.
This is only the second state visit of Trump's current term, after King Charles and Queen Camilla in April. The last Chinese state visit to the White House sat in another political era. Between those two dates sit an export-control regime, a rare-earth licensing fight, and a technology industry that now writes more of US-China policy than the State Department does. Thursday night will not settle that. It will show who is allowed to watch.
