Bettina Trump confirms Russian boxing chief paid for Bahamas wedding parties

Bettina Trump confirmed on 14 September that Umar Kremlev, the Russian president of the International Boxing Association, very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations after her wedding to Donald Trump Jr. The post, signed by the couple, followed a ProPublica investigation that said Kremlev spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on the Bahamas after-parties, including about $100,000 a night to rent a private island and about $70,000 for fireworks.

The payments, ProPublica reported, citing records and three people familiar with the event, ran through a Dubai entity affiliated with the IBA. The association has been financed by Gazprom, the Russian state energy company. Kremlev's office told the outlet the two men have a friendly relationship, first met a few years ago through hunting, and that Kremlev has never discussed political matters with any of his American friends. A spokesperson for Trump Jr. called Kremlev a personal friend of Don and said they are not in business together.

The bride's statement did not deny the money. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful, she wrote. Generosity doesn't automatically come with an agenda.

Who paid, and who was in the room

The wedding itself was on 22 May on two private islands in the Bahamas. Trump Jr. married Palm Beach socialite Bettina Anderson. About 50 guests attended. President Donald Trump stayed in Washington. ProPublica reported that a large group of Russian-speaking guests surprised other invitees, and that some of Trump Jr.'s longtime friends were not invited. Kremlev, who speaks limited English, was among those present. Guests asked who he was.

Forbes has estimated Trump Jr.'s fortune at about $300 million. He could have paid for the island and the fireworks. He did not have to accept the gift. He did.

Kremlev's other file is public. Vladimir Putin awarded him the Order of Friendship in April. Days before the May wedding, Putin and Kremlev were photographed together in China. The IBA, which Kremlev leads, was stripped of recognition by the International Olympic Committee in 2023 after a long dispute over governance, finances and Russian influence. The organisation continues to stage its own events and to move money through the Dubai vehicle named in the ProPublica records.

The rule that does not bind a son

Federal officials and their spouses face gift rules. Adult children of a sitting president do not, unless they hold office or a government contract. Trump Jr. does not. The legal question is therefore thin. The political question is not. Russia remains at war in Ukraine. The same week the confirmation landed, a Russian drone wrecked a locomotive at Yahodyn, two kilometres from the Polish border, minutes after a diplomatic train had passed. The White House is asking Europe for more weapons and asking voters to live with oil near $108 a barrel.

A wedding gift from a Putin decoratee does not change those facts. It sits next to them. The couple's defence is personal friendship and boxing. That may be the whole story. It is also the story that is now on the record, in the bride's own words, with a dollar range attached by a newsroom that saw the invoices.

New York Times reporter Ben Protess, writing on 14 September, said two people with knowledge of the matter confirmed the payments. The Washington Post reported the same confirmation from Bettina Trump's Instagram account. No US ethics office has opened a file, because none has jurisdiction over a private wedding paid for by a foreign national who does not appear on the current sanctions lists that bind American banks.

What the episode does change is the guest list for the next such event. Anyone who attends a Trump family celebration now has to assume that the person paying for the island may be a Russian state-linked official, and that the fact will become public months later, with photographs. That is a smaller problem than a sanctions breach. It is still a problem the family chose.
