A planned "peptide party" in Koramangala was cancelled on Friday after Karnataka's Food Safety and Drug Administration asked the organisers to prove what they intended to serve and under which law.
The event had been set for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, 29 August, as an invite-only gathering of about 50 people. Social posts promised peptide tastings, music, food and networking. Upsurge Labs LLP was named as the organiser. Commissioner Srinivas K said inspectors visited the company office because the department did not know what products would be in the room.
The notice, dated 27 August, asked for identity, composition, manufacturer, import papers, dosage, intended use and regulatory status of each peptide. It asked a direct legal question: did the products count as drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940? If not, what statute put them outside that Act? Failure to answer, the notice said, could freeze the event and bring further action.
Authorised representatives of Upsurge Labs then filed a written statement that the party was off. They asked for time to produce documents. The department said that time has been given. Health Minister U.T. Khader told The Hindu that the cancellation followed public argument on social media about safety and status.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Some are licensed medicines. Some are sold online to gym users and "biohackers" as unapproved research chemicals. A tasting event sits in a grey strip between a seminar and a distribution. That is why the 1940 Act question matters. If the vials are drugs, they need a licence, a label and a qualified person. If they are food, they need a different paper. If they are neither, the event has no legal hook to hang on.
The department has not published a finding that a law was broken. The cancellation is the organiser's response to an enquiry, not a conviction. The documents, when they arrive, will decide whether the file closes or turns into a case.
Bengaluru has a large private wellness market and a large clinical-research industry. Those two worlds use some of the same words and do not live under the same rules. Saturday's party tried to put them in one room with a DJ. The inspectors asked for the licences first. The party did not happen.
