BCCI calls Gambhir, Agarkar and Laxman to Mumbai to fix the away record
Thursday's meeting also lists captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer. Agarkar's term ends in early October. India lost 2-0 in Ireland and 4-0 in the England T20Is, then dropped the ODI series 2-1.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has called head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Centre of Excellence head V.V.S. Laxman to the Mumbai office on 3 September. Captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are expected in the room. Secretary Devajit Saikia will sit with them. Two senior executives are also listed. Other office-bearers may join by video.
The trigger is the European summer. India lost a T20I series in Ireland 2-0, ending a 16-series unbeaten run in the format. England then won the T20Is 4-0 after a washout. India took the first ODI in Birmingham and lost the next two, surrendering that series 2-1. A 1-0 Test win in Sri Lanka did not erase the white-ball damage. Failure to bowl Sri Lanka out on the last day in Colombo also hurt World Test Championship maths.
Injuries, the CoE, and a contract on the clock
Player availability is the first operational file. Hardik Pandya has not played competitive cricket since the IPL. Other centrally contracted names have broken down before tours. The Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru runs rehabilitation. Players and the selection panel have both been described, in reporting around this meeting, as unhappy with how timelines are shared. Gambhir and Agarkar are expected to ask Laxman for names, dates and a method that the dressing room will trust before the New Zealand tour in October and November.
Agarkar took over as chief selector in July 2023. One version of the contract clock puts the end date at the close of September. Another puts it at 4 October. BCCI rules cap a selector at four years, so he can be extended through September 2027, which would cover the ODI World Cup that starts in October 2027. Continuity is the argument for keeping him. India's ODI form, and a reported freeze with the board over Rohit Sharma's future, are the arguments against an easy renewal.
Rohit scored a hundred at Lord's on Sunday and said he was not retiring. That innings does not close the selection debate. It does put a recent score on the table when the same room talks about a 2027 ODI core.
What the board wants on paper
Saikia had promised a review after the away summer. Thursday is that review, late. The output the board needs is not a press line. It is a written path through New Zealand, the home season, and the World Cup squad logic, including who owns fitness sign-off when the CoE, the coach and the captain disagree.
IPL workload will come up because it always does when India lose overseas in mid-year. The new fact in this meeting is the combination of a selector's expiry date, two captains in the room, and a rehab centre that the players no longer treat as a given.
