Indian bank unions have called a nationwide strike on Thursday, 11 September, to press for a five-day working week. The date is the first in a published sequence. Unions have also listed a three-day strike on 28, 29 and 30 September and an indefinite nationwide strike from 26 October if the demand is not met.
Public sector and many private bank staff still work a six-day roster in large parts of the branch network. Saturday opening remains common for retail counters. Unions want Saturday treated as a closed day, in line with a growing list of government offices and with banks in several other countries. Managements have argued that a five-day week would cut customer access unless digital channels take more of the load.
A one-day strike hits cheque clearing, some loan disbursals, cash logistics and branch cash-out. ATMs and apps stay up if the technology teams are excluded or if contingency staff are rostered. Past bank strikes in India have closed most public sector branches while leaving a thin private and payments layer running. The 11 September date falls mid-week, which raises the chance of a backlog into Friday.
The later dates matter more than Thursday. A three-day stoppage at the end of September sits near month-end settlement. An indefinite strike from 26 October would run into the festival withdrawal season. That is the leverage the unions are pointing at. The government and the Indian Banks’ Association now have three calendar markers, not one protest day.
No settlement was announced on Tuesday. Customers who need cash, drafts or locker access on 11 September will have to use 10 September or digital rails. Banks that want to avoid October will have to put a five-day formula on paper before the 28 September window opens.
