Bangladesh Keeps Door Open to Saudi-Pakistan-Turkey Defence Pact

Bangladesh has left open the possibility of joining a defence cooperation arrangement involving Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, according to reports circulating on 25 August 2026.

The development comes at a moment when the schedule for a visit to Delhi by Tarique Rahman remains unclear. Any formal alignment with the three-nation grouping would alter the strategic geometry of South Asia and the Indian Ocean region.

India has historically maintained close security and economic ties with Bangladesh. A shift toward a pact that includes Pakistan would introduce new variables into border management, maritime security and regional diplomacy.

Official statements from Dhaka have been cautious. The government has not confirmed membership but has not ruled it out. The timing relative to internal political transitions and external outreach is being watched closely in New Delhi.

Whether the discussion produces a formal accession or remains exploratory will depend on domestic calculations in Bangladesh and the incentives offered by the other three partners.
