Attackers ambushed a police convoy near Gidan-Giye village in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State on 3 November, killing at least eight security personnel. The dead included five police officers and three members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard, a state-backed vigilante group. Local vigilante officials and a police statement confirmed the toll.
The attackers fired on a 15-seater bus carrying the team. They destroyed the vehicle, seized five AK-47 rifles and abducted an unspecified number of personnel. Police later recovered the bodies of the five officers, rescued seven others and evacuated two wounded officers for treatment. A police officer told Reuters that some officers remain missing; authorities have not confirmed the exact number.
Details of the ambush
Vigilante commandant Lawal Haruna and CPG member Abubakar Isa described the attack to Reuters. The incident occurred in a region where kidnappings and armed assaults are frequent. One account placed the ambush on the Gusau-Sokoto highway; another located it near Gidan-Giye. Police said the officers were travelling on official duty. A separate report indicated the team was heading to provide security for an All Progressives Congress senatorial rerun primary in Zamfara North.
Zone 10 Police Command spokesperson ASP Abdallah Faruk Ambursa confirmed that officers attached to the headquarters were attacked. He said the state command in Zamfara is investigating. No arrests have been announced. The seized rifles and the missing personnel remain unaccounted for in public statements.
Ongoing insecurity in the northwest
Zamfara and neighbouring states in northwest Nigeria have recorded repeated attacks on security forces, travellers and villages for several years. Bandit groups operate across forested areas and frequently ambush road convoys. The Community Protection Guard was created to supplement police capacity; three of its members died in this incident.
No group has claimed responsibility. Police have not released the names of the dead officers or the CPG members. Local media in Gusau reported that residents along the highway expressed fear after the attack. Commuters continue to use the route despite the risk.
What is known and what is not
The verified toll is at least five police officers and three CPG members killed, two officers wounded, five rifles taken, and an unknown number of personnel abducted. The bus was destroyed. Rescue and recovery operations concluded on the same day. Further details on the missing and on any pursuit of the attackers have not been made public.
The ambush fits a pattern of attacks on security convoys in Zamfara. It does not, on present information, mark a change in the groups involved or in the tactics used. The immediate consequence is the loss of eight security personnel and the continued disruption of road movement in Tsafe Local Government Area.
