Akhilesh Yadav drops a third Rajya Sabha name and points at 403 assembly seats
On the last day for nominations, the Samajwadi Party chief said the party's focus was on 403 assembly seats, not a third Upper House candidate. Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani have already filed. Scrutiny is on 7 October.

Akhilesh Yadav closed the week-long question of a third Samajwadi Party candidate for the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha election on Tuesday, the last day for filing nominations. He wrote that the party's focus was now on 403, not on three. The 403 is the size of the Uttar Pradesh assembly. The three was the extra Upper House nominee his own camp had floated once the numbers were in hand. They are not.
The party has already filed two names in Lucknow: Ram Gopal Yadav, the veteran, and Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani, a Reliance Industries executive. Indian Express reported Yadav's announcement that no third name would be added. India Today, citing the same morning's post, kept a sliver of suspense in the wording and noted that Yadav had earlier said a third candidate would come only if the arithmetic worked. The post itself moves the public line from the Rajya Sabha form to the next assembly map.
The other slate
The BJP settled its eight names on Monday and left two sitting members off the list. Hardeep Singh Puri and B.L. Verma, both Union ministers whose terms end next month, were not renominated. The eight who were named are state minister Dharampal Singh, Shruti Gangwar, Prakash Pal, Vidya Sagar Sonkar, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Radhakant Ojha, Gopi Krishna Pandey and Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan. Eight is the number the BJP can underwrite from its own assembly bench and its allies. Two is what the Samajwadi Party can underwrite. A third SP name would have needed votes the party has not shown.
The election timetable is short. Scrutiny of papers is on 7 October. Withdrawals close on 9 October. Polling is on 16 October. In a biennial election the vote is by MLAs, marked preferentially, and the quota is fixed by the number of seats and the strength of the house. A party that files one more name than its votes can carry does not steal a seat. It splits its own first preferences and, in a tight count, can hand a seat to the other side. That is the mechanical reason a third SP form was always a threat as much as a tactic. Yadav has now declined it in public, on the day the window shut.
Why Nathwani is on an SP form
Nathwani is not a party organiser from a district committee. He is a Reliance executive, and his nomination sits in a pattern the Samajwadi Party has used before: a safe seat, or a winnable one, offered to a business figure who brings money, a vote or a relationship the party wants on the record. The party has not published a reason. The fact of the filing is enough to read. Ram Gopal Yadav is the organisational name, the leader whose term the party is renewing. Nathwani is the outside name. Together they use the seats the SP can actually win. A third name would have been a gesture. Gestures in a preferential ballot have a cost.
Yadav spent Tuesday morning in Delhi as well as on the Lucknow file. He walked with INDIA bloc MPs from Parliament toward the Election Commission and sat with them on Parliament Street after police stopped the march short of Nirvachan Sadan. The Rajya Sabha announcement and the Form 6 protest are the same day's work for a party that needs the bloc in Delhi and its own bench in Lucknow. The 403 line is the assembly election, still years out on the formal calendar and already the frame he wants on the party office wall.
What Tuesday locks in
Once nominations close, the only movements left are scrutiny objections and withdrawals. A name can still come off by 9 October. A new name cannot go on. If both SP forms survive scrutiny, the party's Upper House ticket for this round is Yadav and Nathwani, and the BJP's is the eight announced on Monday, minus Puri and Verma. The ministers left off the list go back to the Union council without a guaranteed return to the house next month. That is a personnel fact in Delhi, not only a Lucknow one. Puri has held the petroleum and housing briefs. Verma has sat on the BJP's Uttar Pradesh bench in the upper chamber. Their absence from the slate is the sharpest signal the ruling party sent on Monday. Yadav's refusal of a third name is the sharpest the opposition sent on Tuesday.
