Ajit Doval Arrives in Beijing for 25th Round of India-China Boundary Talks

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing on Monday for the 25th round of Special Representatives talks on the India-China boundary question. He is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister and Politburo member Wang Yi on Tuesday and will also call on Vice President Han Zheng.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the talks would include in-depth communication on the boundary question in the spirit of previous understandings between the leaders of both countries. The sides will also exchange views on bilateral relations and regional and international issues.

The meeting follows the 24th round held last year and a Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination session on August 6 that reviewed the situation along the Line of Actual Control. Both sides have described the border as generally stable while India continues to stress that the state of bilateral ties depends on peace and tranquillity on the ground.

The talks come weeks ahead of the BRICS Summit that India will host on September 12. New Delhi hopes Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend, which would mark his first visit to India in seven years and open the possibility of another meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Recent references to border delimitation suggest the two sides are exploring limited early-harvest agreements in some sectors while working toward a broader framework. Differences over Arunachal Pradesh and the status of previous disengagement arrangements remain part of the agenda.
