An Air India flight from Frankfurt to Delhi was diverted to Jaipur on Wednesday morning after the pilot activated a hijack alert. The Boeing 787-9, operating as AI2030, landed safely at Jaipur International Airport at 9:35 am with 306 passengers and crew on board. All passengers deboarded under standard security procedures.
Sources told Indian media that the pilot may have pressed the Squawk Code 7500, the international signal for unlawful interference, by mistake while the aircraft was in the Mumbai Flight Information Region. The alert prompted the diversion. Jaipur Airport head Charan Singh confirmed the safe landing and said passengers would be moved onward according to standard operating procedures.
The incident occurred against a background of heightened aviation security awareness in India. Previous false or accidental activations of the 7500 code have produced similar diversions and ground responses. In this case the aircraft reached the ground without further incident. No secondary threat was reported after the landing.
Air India has not released a full public statement on the exact sequence inside the cockpit. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation and other agencies will review the flight-data and cockpit-voice recordings as part of the normal post-incident process. The diversion itself followed the established protocol once the code was transmitted.
Frankfurt–Delhi is a regular long-haul route for Air India. The Boeing 787-9 is the aircraft type commonly used on the service. Passengers faced delay and an unscheduled stop, but the safe outcome means the event registers as a security-protocol activation rather than an actual hijacking attempt. Crew and ground teams followed the checklist once the alert was received.
The episode highlights the sensitivity of the hijack code. A single keystroke or switch action transmits a signal that air-traffic control and security services treat as real until proven otherwise. In past cases, accidental activations have led to fighter escorts or full airport lockdowns. Jaipur’s response appears to have been proportionate once the aircraft was on the ground and the situation clarified.
Passengers will continue to their destinations after screening. The aircraft will be inspected before any further flight. For Air India the immediate operational cost is the diversion, the passenger re-accommodation, and the investigation time. For the broader system the event is another data point on how quickly a mistaken code can reroute a wide-body jet and mobilise ground resources. The review of the cockpit actions will determine whether additional training or procedural changes follow.
