A gas leak from a cylinder pipe set off a flare at Hostel 6 on the IIT Bombay campus in Powai at about 10:24 on Thursday night. Five people were hurt, two of them children. All five were reported stable. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's disaster management cell said the call came through Rajawadi Hospital. Police and ward staff went to the hostel. Four of the injured were taken to Kasturba Hospital. One went to Rajawadi.
The injured are Ansh Ahirwar, 12, and Tahjib Aalam, 9, both moved to Kasturba; Ishwar Singh, 37, admitted to Rajawadi; and Shivkumar Singh, 34, and Anilkumar Yadav, 23, also taken to Kasturba. An official told the Indian Express that a leak from the cylinder was the likely start of the flare. The Times of India, citing preliminary information, said a small blaze preceded cylinder explosions. Occupants were evacuated. The fire brigade was still at the site as the night went on. No one was killed.
The second leak in the city on the same day
Thursday's hostel flare was the second gas incident the city logged. Earlier, a leak at a labour camp in Mulund started a large fire. The two sites have nothing in common except the fuel and the date. One is a hostel on a campus that houses students, staff and families. The other is a camp for workers. The civic response was the same shape: a disaster-cell timestamp, a hospital destination, and a fire brigade call. The difference is who was in the room. At Hostel 6 the injured include a 9-year-old and a 12-year-old, which means the cylinder was in a place where children live, not only in a laboratory or a canteen counted as institutional.
IIT Bombay's hostels are not uniform. Some blocks house undergraduates. Others house research scholars and staff quarters mixed into the same numbering. Hostel 6, on the Powai campus, is a residential building inside a technical institute, subject to the institute's own safety rules and to the city's fire code. A cylinder pipe is a domestic fitting. The failure mode the officials described, a leak that found a flame, is the failure mode of a kitchen, not of a research gas line. That distinction decides which inspection follows: the institute's hostel maintenance, or a laboratory safety audit. On the facts given on Thursday night, it is the first.
What the hospitals and the clock show
The 10:24 timestamp is the civic record, not the moment the leak began. A flare reported at that hour, with patients already at Rajawadi, means the first call came from a hospital rather than from the campus control room. That is a small administrative fact. It suggests the injured were moved before the disaster cell was the first to know, which is common when a campus uses its own vehicle or a private one and the hospital then notifies the city. It also means the public count of five is a hospital count. If a later review finds someone treated and discharged without being logged, the number moves. As of Friday morning it had not.
Kasturba and Rajawadi are municipal hospitals. Sending four patients to one and one to the other is a capacity decision made at night, not a ranking of injuries. Stable, in a civic bulletin, means the patients were not listed as critical at the time of the note. It does not describe burns, inhalation, or how long they will stay.
The inspection that has not been published
A cylinder explosion in a hostel raises a list of questions the Thursday bulletin does not answer. Who owned the cylinder. Whether it was an institute supply or a private one in a staff kitchen. When the pipe was last checked. Whether the building's gas detection, if any, alarmed. The Mulund camp fire earlier the same day gives the city two scenes to inspect with the same questions. Until those notes are published, the verified record is the clock, the hostel number, the five names and ages, the two hospitals, and the fact that everyone listed was alive and stable when the night ended.
