A 16-year-old male opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on 15 October 2026, killing three children and one teacher before an armed community member shot him dead inside the building. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the children were ages 5, 8 and 11. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured and taken to hospital.
The first call reached dispatch at 12:59 p.m. local time reporting that someone had fired into a car. Within a minute, multiple 911 calls described an active shooter inside the school. The teenager, a Bend resident, forced entry by shooting at locked doors with a long gun. Police have not yet identified the specific type of weapon or the number of rounds fired.
A community member who saw the shooter enter the school followed him inside and engaged him in gunfire. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and found the suspect already dead. Chief Krantz credited the bystander with stopping further loss of life. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek called the intervention heroic. The bystander has not been named. Police said it is not yet clear whether the shooter had any connection to the school.
The Bend-La Pine School District cancelled all classes and activities for 16 October. Superintendent Steven Cook said the district was stunned and heartbroken. Students were reunited with parents at a nearby church after officers cleared the building classroom by classroom. The school opened in 2015 and serves the local elementary population in a city of roughly 100,000 people located about three and a half hours southeast of Portland.
Investigators continue to examine the shooter's path, the weapon, and any prior indicators. No motive has been released. The quick intervention by an armed civilian has become a central fact in early accounts. Police confirmed the bystander held a concealed-carry permit and was a parent or relative of a student at the school, according to some local reporting.
The incident adds to the record of school shootings in the United States this year. It is the first fatal elementary-school attack in Oregon in recent memory. Local hospitals treated the two surviving victims. St. Charles Bend received both. No further casualties were reported after the bystander engaged the shooter.
Community response has focused on the families of the five dead, including the perpetrator. Governor Kotek said no parent should face such a day and that the state would support the community through the investigation and recovery. Federal agencies have not yet announced a larger role, though local and state police lead the inquiry.
The short timeline—from the first call to the shooter's death—lasted roughly three minutes. That window limited the number of additional victims but left open questions about how the teenager obtained the long gun and why he chose Silver Rail. Authorities have not released the names of the deceased children or the teacher pending family notification and next-of-kin confirmation.
Schools across the district will remain closed on Friday while counseling resources are organized. The attack occurred on a Thursday afternoon during regular class time. The bystander's decision to pursue the shooter rather than wait outside is now part of the official narrative offered by police and the governor.
